2 Nov 2015. <GB-ENG> Reading, Berks —

A day of travel. The fog is still with us — apparently there is a huge inversion layer covering much of the UK. Airline schedules are in chaos, as the major airports have been cancelling flights right, left and centre. Let's hope it all clears before we want to fly out! — There are quite a few weeks yet!

November 11 is coming up. Poppy sellers are in the streets — full marks to them. They're usually not young, and the weather has been cool to cold, and gloomy and wet. But still they stand out there selling their poppies. We've even noticed a few huge poppies decorating roundabouts.

We are travelling towards Bath, as we didn't do it justice when we were last in the area. So we're driving westwards on the M4, one of the major motorways. This has superb rest and service stops every 30 or so miles, and we planned to stop off at one for the night, near Reading. They do charge you to stay — it's free for the first two hours, but then a 24-hour fee cuts in — for us it was £15, a reasonable charge for safe and convenient overnighting — and Gertie was happy to snuggle up amongst the big boys again!

Distance driven — today, 64 miles ( 103 km ); to date, 30,518 miles ( 49,114 km )
