Woke up early as Alligin knocked on our van door on his way off to school — they start school at an ungodly hour here! It was not unexpected — he had arranged last night to do it.
Gnome went up to her allotment to do some weeding. We walked down to the local shops, posted a couple of parcels — and Suzie got a haircut!
We got back to the house much as Gnome got back. We said our sad goodbyes — and Gnome gave us a bag of Basler Läckerli biscuits, giving us six weeks to eat them. They're so delicious, we suspect they mightn't last that long!
On our way out, we called past the laundry to pick up our washing —although not pressed (we didn't want that) it was beautifully folded!
As we were driving out of Zürich, we passed by a group of allotments — not where Gnome has hers. The blocks of land in the city are so small that gardens are usually out of the question. Gnome is particularly fortunate in that they have enough space outside for a small garden — where the children have a slide and a tree-house that get a lot of use — as well as her allotment where she grows her vegetables. They also have chickens in their very small back yard.
We also passed a roadworking team mowing the grass by the highway — although it looked more as if they were mowing the dirt!
The Swiss are nothing if not efficient! Rather than taking up space for a solar array, they have at times utilised the waste space on the sound baffles beside the highway to hang their solar panels!
We have decided to make for Bern to do a little exploration, and we found a highway stop off the A1 only 14km short of Bern. A good spot to start off from tomorrow!

What a nice little stop off. A shade treee, a picnic table and a rubbish bin handy too. Looks like the big boys have you blocked in though. Kay's daughter and family sounded delightful. Did you get the biscuit recipe? I'll make you some more for Christmas. it'll be fun for you to be home among the crew again. You won't be able to believe how much they've all changed in some ways since you went away. I agree the roadside mower looks like a dust blower. The kids start school at 7 or 7.30 don't they? And have sports and athletics in the afternoons. Sensible program. Do they have their midday meals provided at school? Oh well, Bern next. What will you have to tell us about that? Love Cathy
