11 Sep 2015. <FR> Flavigny-le-Petit, Guise; Richebourg, Béthune-Bruay —
Before we left the Aire de Loivre, Warren gave Gertie's windscreen a once-over, and Suzie disposed of our rubbish. It's amazing that two people can generate a full bag of rubbish each day!

We stopped for lunch in the little car park outside la Nécropole nationale de la Désolation, Flavigny-le-Petit, Guise. This World War I cemetery was originally set up by the Germans, but later on the French added another section. It is primarily associated with the Battle of Guise, August 28-30, 1914. There are six other national cemeteries nearby!

Henri Matisse, the painter, lived for some months in Lesquielles-Saint-Germain. We know this because they have painted their water tower to mark this fact!

We found an aire well off the beaten track, in the village of Richebourg in the region of Béthune-Bruay, not that far short of Dunkerque and Calais -- we had to negotiate about 30km of what we so blithely call Garmin roads to get there. It was so isolated, we expected to be the only van there. Imagine our surprise when we found we were definitely not on our own -- the visitors to the aire had even spilled out into the car park of the Sport Centre.

The heavens delighted us with a particularly spectacular display tonight!

  1. Sure was a spectacular display. Cirrhus are pretty. Gertie looked lonely-though probably peaceful. You got a bit of everything human really-art, war, agriculture, cyclists, pretty buildings. Nice day I think. No caffeine? No french food? Love ya, Cathy
