17 Sep 2015. <GB-ENG> Farthing Common, & Ashford, & Challock, East Kent; Hythe, Kent —

Back to JCB Volkswagen for the final touches. We came away an hour or so later with Gertie hale and hearty, and having passed her MoT. We sadly bade goodbye to out new friends, Chris and Emma-Louise at JCB.

We drove out to our friendly local PO to pay the road tax, only to find that he was not authorised to do it. So we went next to find a supplier of Calor Gas — our two empty cylinders, once replaced, would last us till the end of our trip, and we will be able to get rid of our three CampinGaz cylinders somewhere in France! We drove to a local petrol station listed as a supplier — he was, but had no stocks of the 7kg cylinders we needed. So we went out to Challock, to the Barn Shop (also a listed supplier), and were successful.

Then it was the turn of a post office at which to pay the road tax. As POs in the UK are not supposed to accept credit cards for which signatures are required — and because the post office card readers apparently can't contact with Australia for PIN verification — we had to first find a Bankomat to take out the requisite £126.50 in cash — we were about one dollar short otherwise! Found a bank in Hythe, and there was a post office just round the corner, so we were able to do both things at there.

The day was drawing on, so we decided to return to our haunt at Farthing Common, and then start on our way towards Harwich in the morning.

Distance driven — today, 54 miles ( 86 km ); to date, 28,708 miles ( 46,201 km )

  1. All sounds very travel oriented and complicated to me you two. We ARE meant to be a global economy in someways, yet the antipodes are still too far away to contact? You're not short of money are you, or was it just a temporary glitch? I'll set up a bail out fund here if you are. Anyway, love Cathy
