10 Sep 2015. <FR> Romanswiller, Alsace; Flanders battlefields; Reims; Aire de Repos de Loivre (near Reims)
Farewell Romanswiller, farewell horses. Today is a driving day through northern France.

It wasn't long before we found a major hypermarket — E.Leclerc — where we topped up our supplies.

It's sobering to think that this beautiful countryside was ravaged by two World Wars not that long ago, as is evidenced by the numerous signs marking battlefields, and the many war memorials. We really are driving 'in Flanders' fields'.

We love the attention they pay to their roundabouts around here — one was labelled 'travail des fourmis' (ants' work), another was too far away, but it looked somewhat like a stylized wing-walker on a biplane's wings.

Roadwork continues to be a theme of our trip. There was bridgework going on as we crossed the Meuse.

We finally settled into an aire by the road, Aire de Repos de Loivre, off the A26 just north of Reims on our way towards Lille — not that we're touring these cities, just that they are on our direct path towards Calais).

Distance driven — today, 223 miles ( 359 km ); to date, 28,261 miles ( 45,482 km )
