5 Jun 2015. <TR> Konya —
Today we decided on a very quiet day in, staying in the van and trying to catch up on blogging. Then, later on, to try to find a Macca's, or something else, to break the dam in our internet connectivity.

The first part of our mission went well, and then we went in to Konya to do some grocery shopping, and to find our old friend Macca's.

On the way in, we passed a little old lady pushing her trolley. She declined assistance from a gallant young Turk, who Suzie says she wouldn't have turned down!

Konya, like all of Turkey, is in an electoral frenzy — the election is the day after tomorrow (Sunday, June 7).

Warren had run out of beer, so while we were in the middle of a Konya shopping street, Warren decided to pop out and try to replenish his supplies.
  1. Konya is the most Islamic city in Turkey
  2. Alcohol is forbidden in Islam
  3. Today is Friday (Jumu'ah), the most holy day for Muslims (although technically not a Sabbath)
  4. Very few shops in Konya stock alcohol at all
  5. ... and if they did, they would be unlikely to sell it on Jumu'ah
What he did find, however, was (as it was the hour of the midday Friday prayer (ṣalāt al-jum`ah, or simply Jum'ah, mandatory for all Islamic men — all the mosques were full to bursting. The first mosque he passed had its entire outside courtyard filled with men performing Jum'ah. The next, larger, mosque was even more stretched — at least 100 metres of the pavement outside was totally given over to prayer.

We got to a large shopping centre which had a McDonald's. Turns out that the Macca's simply used the WiFi provided by the centre — and you needed to register — and you needed to give your mobile phone number (which works in Turkey, which we don't have) to receive your password once you register — so Macca's was a wipeout. So we went to the food outlet next door, which was Turkish, and had durum döner kebap — just like the doner kebab wraps we get at home! Maccas has definitely not been our internet stopgap here in Turkey!

But while we were in the shopping centre, we did our shopping in the supermarket there, and wandered about exploring the shops. There was a rather well-equipped shoe-shine man in there — but we weren't going to let him loose on our sneakers!

We returned to the campsite, seeing more of the weird and wonderful on the way back.

Back at the campsite, Turca (the dog has been named pro tempore by one of the other couples camping here). Suzie fed him again, using bread , salami and milk — but not too much, as he is obviously not used you having full meals, and we wouldn't want to upset his digestion. After this, he just curled up, contented, near our van — best friends forever (or until we move on!).

Distance driven — today, 16 miles ( 25 km ); to date, 21,589 miles ( 34,744 km )

Aparently oustupid navy gave the crew of a peopl-smuggling boat $5ooo each to turn around and go back into Indonesian waters (so the Indonesians say1) Abbott is being mealy mouthed about the issue-we'll turn back the boats by hook or by crook. he's right about the latter if the stupidity happened. Oh well, back into work for me. Love CJ
