19 Jun 2015. <TR> Alaplı; Büyükmelen Çayı; Şile —
Another day of driving, this time from near Alapi, round the coast to Şile. We were driving immediately alongside the Black Sea — although the Garmin seemed to think we were closer to the water than we actually were!

On the way, we passed a little market with the sign we had been looking for — AYGAZ. We were finally able to get a fresh bottle of gas!

We stopped off at a little cafe near the outlet of a river (Büyükmelen Çayı). This place was way off the beaten track, in Melenağzı, and we wonder how its owner makes a living out of it. But it was a pleasant stop, overlooking a pretty little harbour..

A lifeguard station waiting for customers!

We soon came upon huge roadworks, and our plan to drive around the coast route went by the boards. We were diverted onto another road. Turns out we were now on a 'farm road' that wound through the hills, at times looking little more than a bush track. But we persisted, and ultimately came out onto good roads again — well driven Suzie.

Half the road had collapsed away — is this normality here?

We stopped off in the parking area outside the Kandira Belediyesi Mezarlığı (The Kandira Municipal Cemetery) for lunch. It decided to rain while we were there, so we ate to the sound of rain on our rooftop.

When we set off again, it was still raining, and so it was for much of our our drive through the hills.

We finally came into Şile. We drove into the town, hoping to find a park near the beach. No such luck — it's hilly, with narrow, traffic-ridden streets, and the seafront is mainly clifftop, with no parking to be found. It would probably be a great town to stay in, in lodgings or a hotel, but it is definitely camper-unfriendly. So we drove back out, to a flat spot we had noticed out of town, where we stayed the night. We decided not to stay around to explore tomorrow, but to press on to Istanbul — there's just so much to see there!

Distance driven — today, 133 miles ( 214 km ); to date, 22,687 miles ( 36,512 km )
