First thing for today — book back into Alpha Camping. Then we made our way to the Prado, on the way dropping into the nearby park, where we found a secondhand book market.
Last time at the Prado we only had time to explore the first floor. Today we want to go through the lower floor, where there are Goya's latter works — his Black Paintings, as well as 'The Second of May 1808' and 'The Third of May 1808' — two of his most powerful paintings!
There's a good collection of works by Heironymous Bosch (aka El Bosco), and of Albrecht Dürer, including one of his most famous self portraits.
In the lower level of the Prado are numerous other interesting works, including a copy of the 'Mona Lisa' painted in Leonardo's school at the same time as the famous one in the Louvre. There are also German and Spanish paintings simultaneous with the French Impressionists.
We also found a wonderful work by Genaro Pérez Villaamil, a diptych containing 42 small paintings of scenes in Spanish cities, many of which we have seen in our travels. Delightful!
(As we were not allowed to take photos in the Prado, we've sought copies of some of the works from other sources!)
After quite a few hours in the Prado, we went back to Atocha station and back to Alpha Camping.
Distance driven — today, 1 miles ( 2 km ); to date, 15,032 miles ( 24,192 km )
Wonderful paintings and terrifying ones too. I'm not sure why i don't like the Mona Lisa in any form. She just has the sort of face I'd never trust in a female, pregnant or not. She's inward looking. She doesn't give. Didn't like those big trees you were camped amongst. Do the branches drop off with regularity on hot still days as they do here? The public transport looks clean and efficient. The nudes were very well done. What was depicted on that magnificent screen? I guess you didn't purchase the life of Philip the fifth, Warren. I had a looka t the enlarged screen. Local scenes? The avenue of ?Elms was wonderful. The war scenes were terrifying. We actually have what is called a Garden of Unearthly delights here in Adelaide as part of our fringe Festival each time. the only thing I can see in common is the pavilion (we have one that comes out from Austria each time and is pre-fab.) Lovely pictures. Liked the sculpted Goya too. Oh well, until next time, Love cathy Jones
