Today we left Villefranche and started towards Italy. But first, we needed to visit an aire to empty our toilet cassette. We went backwards to Cannes to do this, meaning that we drove through parts of Nice that we had walked only yesterday! We stopped off at a Carrefour supermarket in Nice to shop — parked under a large gum tree! Carrefour even stock the CampinGaz gas supplies we need in Europe! When we reached the Flot Bleu aire in Cannes, which takes cashless payment only, we found it didn't recognise our Australian Visa cards. So we went back onto the tollway, and went to the Aire du Piccolaret, where we'd been before, and used its facilities to perform our task! Then onwards towards Italy!
We decided to stay on tollways the whole way — the alternative would have been very sinuous roads up and down and round hillsides. This meant a lot of tunnels, not much opportunity for touristic pursuits — but we did what we could.
We crossed into Italy and drove through (and past) Genoa and down towards Pisa. Late in the afternoon we found an aire (really a parking aresa) off the A12 motorway, just before we reached Rapallo, and we decided to pull in. Good choice — it was large, quiet, and a good place to spend the night. Another great travelling day!
Distance driven — today, 199 miles ( 320 km ); to date, 16,458 miles ( 26,487 km )
A good idea to stick to the low roads I think, tho' more expensive and less picturesque. Why is the blog on-line surrounded by views of a plane and cloud Warren? Was it a "we're off now" shot from the plane you flew away from us on? And no, I split the infinitive for effect, not by accident (Liar, Liar) I am so sick of critiquing the ruddy Government Standards docos for maternal and neonatal care.
