6 Oct 2015. <DE> Trier —
Today when we woke up, we wondered what Gertie had said or done to offend them — all of her big companions had deserted her during the night, and she was left all alone in the Rastplatz drei Hütten.

We soon continued on our way, crossing the German border only a kilometre down the road!

Today was characterised by detours, some of which were quite long and quite disconcerting — we wondered if we would ever get back on he highway. But this is the fun of travelling — you never know exactly what's round the next corner. And the detours were through spectacular and magic scenery.

We took a pause in a little village, where we spotted a Bäckerei where Warren went in to buy a loaf of bread. The different takes on a French baguette are legion, but this one was delicious.

They were mowing the lovely yellow flowers on the verge!

Autumn is definitely with us!

We were driving towards Trier, where we were looking to do a little exploration. When we got to a McDonald's in Trier, the weather had deteriorated, so we decided to rethink our day. We did a lot of communicating with the folks back home — Sue's Mum's funeral has been scheduled for Friday, October 9, so we were in contact with all the relatives, and with Jonno, Tristan and their families in Brisbane. It was far too short notice for us to even try to get back to Australia, but fortunately Jonno and Tris had decided to go down — thanks boys! At least Sue and her little clan would be represented.

With our communication up to date for now, we decided to push on towards Luxembourg — not that far. We stopped short in a roadside stop again, Rastplatz Sauertal, just outside Trier. Another quiet stop, set well back from the highway. We were amazed at a couple of the trucks parked there for the night — they seemed to be carrying one huge bridge girder apiece. When Susie first saw them, another vehicle was obscuring the rear of the first and the front of the second, so it looked like one truck with an impossibly long load!

Distance driven — today, 58 miles ( 93 km ); to date, 29,487 miles ( 47,455 km )
