We left Footland Wood and called up to John's Cross Motorcaravan and Camping Centre, only a mile away, and were able to get our camping supplies — and to get rid of our three empty CampinGaz cylinders. Whoopee — more room in the van!
We were so close to Battle, that we decided to drop back in to the Abbey to indulge in their Cream Teas for morning tea. This is another benefit of being in English Heritage — you don't have to worry about entrance fees if you want to drop back to a place on a whim!
Then we were going to return to Farthing Common to do some typing and writing before tomorrow
BUT
Thwang! A rogue tractor towing a harrow on a narrow road swayed and a couple of wider blades clipped our right-hand mirror — he nearly missed us, demolishing the glass. This mirror is crucial for driving in the UK, as it is the one the driver needs to use to see overtaking or merging traffic — and, technically, we were unroadworthy without it. What to do? Then we realised we were only 12 miles from JCB Volkswagen, whose friendly service had helped us before. So we called them up on the Garmin — we had put them in as a 'Favourite', and within 15 minutes we were there! Yes, they could help us, but the part wouldn't be there until first thing tomorrow. We couldn't really drive anywhere, but they pointed us to a quiet street just round the corner, which proved a perfect stopping point for the night — with McDonald's only a ten minute walk, so we went there for some internet time — and this time, we actually braved the food!
Distance driven — today, 39 miles ( 62 km ); to date, 30,108 miles ( 48,454 km )
