27 Oct 2015. <GB-ENG> Farthing Common, East Kent —
Today was to be much like the 25th, remaining up at Farthing Common catching up on blog and book-work, and then going down to McDonalds to get up as much as we could. And this is how it played out, except that we had some entertainment up at Farthing Common. Mid-morning, a large truck pulled in, looking for a flat spot to park. We, as Farthing Common regulars (?), pointed them to the other end of the car park, where the refreshment van usually pulls up.

Imagine our surprise as they started to unload the truck — two really magnificent black horses, and then a beautiful horse-drawn hearse — only ten years old, equipped with disc brakes! They were here to take part in a funeral at about 12.30pm. We got into conversation, and they were only too happy for us to take photos of them to share on the blog — especially as we gave them a nice hot cuppa midway through their stay. They came from White Horse Farm, which provides luxury livery and horse-drawn carriage hire, and also gives training in dressage and in carriage driving. The only disappointment was that today they had only been asked to provide a hearse drawn by a pair — apparently when they run four horses, four-in-hand, it is a magnificent sight!

They told us a story about a recent funeral, where one of the elderly guests asked if she could have four horses to draw her on her final journey, and the lads tried to book her in for the next Wednesday at 2pm!

Distance driven — today, 23 miles ( 37 km ); to date, 30,242 miles ( 48,670 km )
