20 Oct 2015. <FR> Paris; Aire de la Baie de Somme —
We tried to leave the camp site, but Gertie was a little reluctant. A quick jump start — the camp site had its own equipment and a man to use it (presume it's not the first time this has happened) and we were on our way. A good day for driving, and not much else.

On our way out of Paris, we noticed some quirky snails near a bridge we crossed!

We're on our way towards Calais, finally quitting the Continent and getting back to the UK. Our planned destination for the night was an aire in the Baie de Somme. This is a huge nature reserve in the Somme Estuary, the largest estuary in north-west France. The whole place has been set up on the model of the National Trust nature sites in the UK, and is a major tourist destination. Unfortunately, we're only stopping here for the night.

On the other hand, we were treated to another magnificent sunset, and the wildlife came to meet us — the moles where we parked, the rabbits by the path to the cafeteria and visitor centre, and the ducks and other water fowl we saw on the way.

And the parking area was very secure — a security van came through at least three times during the night!

Distance driven — today, 132 miles ( 212 km ); to date, 29,914 miles ( 48,142 km )

  1. Was that the same Somme Dad fought in in the First World War?. He said it was a mud and trench gas hole and told us stories about engaging farmers' wives with his schoolboy French while his small surviving company of men raided her chook yard. They didn't get fed, housed or paid in that war. Love ya Cathyy
