Day 5 in St Petersburg. Back to the Hermitage, but this time to the Impressonist collection in the General Staff Building, on the opposite side of Dvortosovaya Ploschad.
The now usual Metro trip to the Hermitage, and then into the Impressionists. A magnificent collection! Here are some of the paintings we saw, without full attribution!
Cezanne
Charlot
Dégas
Gauguin
Hignac
Lautrec
Matisse
Monet
Picasso
Renoir
Rouault
van Gogh
After quite a while, we started to feel the pangs of hunger. And here's the rub! The General Staff Building section of the Hermitage doesn't have a cafe within the gallery! To get anything to eat, you have to exit the gallery. And the ticket only allows you one entrance per section per day! So we had to forego any further access to the Impressionists and post-impressionists if we wanted succour. So here's our tip for visiting the Hermitage ... if you get a two-day ticket, make sure you visit ALL parts of the gallery on the first day (particularly the General Staff Building), because you can revisit this part of the gallery on the second day! We were flabbergasted to find that the General Staff Building does not have a cafe within the gallery, particularly as they have a ban on any liquids (for example, water!!!) being taken into the building!
So we had to forego the Post-impressionists that we has planned to visit after lunch, and instead we went back into the other part of the Hermitage to visit a few sections we had bypassed the previous day, like the Russian art.
In spite of this hiccup, we had another wonderful day in the Hermitage!
At the end of the day, we were more than ready to curl up in our nice comfortable beds in the Hotel Arbat Nord!
