22 Jul 2019. <GB> Edinburgh, Scotland —

We went into Princes Street and into the gardens. On the way we passed the well-known monument to Sir Walter Scott, possibly Scotland's best-known novelist, the creator of the Waverley Novels. Must say that, after seeing this and the Albert Memorial in London, one has to wonder about the Victorians' sense of taste!

A subtler memorial, a simple tower, was looking down at us from the top of Calton Hill — the Nelson Monument, built from 1807 to 1815.

A bit further on, we passed the floral clock, all bright and bushy-tailed for the Edinburgh Festival. Notice the bird box up in the corner? The whole thing is a cuckoo clock, and the cuckoo pops out of the box every hour!

We found the Royal Scottish Academy all dressed up for a Bridget Riley exhibition. (She's possibly Britain's greatest exponent of Op Art, with her main works dating from the sixties.)

We got back to the hotel at 11am, when Kay was rocking up to go shopping with Suzie. (How many pairs of shoes can two girls try on?)

Then Kay and Suzie went off to a friend's place, and the three of them had more retail therapy in Biggar Road, a little bit away from the centre of Edinburgh, finally conking out at about 5pm.

Meanwhile, Warren went out, had a somewhat overdue haircut (from a delightful Polish girl), then did a bit of exploring on his own, before returning to the hotel to try to catch up on the Blog.

Suzie and Kay bade a sad farewell a bit later in the evening, and Kay left to catch her bus to where she had parked her car, and then drive back to Gnome's place.

In the evening, we went back into town. Edinburgh Castle looms over the whole city!

In Princes Park we noticed a number of plants that in Australia would be considered weeds, but in Scotland are the national flower!

Suzie stayed for a session of Scottish Country Dancing in Princes Park while Warren went back up to the hotel to blog.
