29 Aug 2015. <DE> Köln —
Today, Lengerich to Köln. A driving day, so the photos will speak for themselves.

We crossed the Dortmund-Ems Kanal a couple of times.

We passed an accident on the other side of the highway — the queue of cars that created went on for miles!

There was some interesting roadside artwork!

We stopped off at a McDonald's within range of Cologne, to catch up on internet time. We had lunch in the van, then coffees in Macca's, a good compromise!

We got to Köln, and Warren keyed into the Garmin a site he remembered from last time. This was a parking spot in a forest, really a parking area for a sportsfield on the outskirts of Köln, with very easy public transport into the heart of the ciry. Amazingly, his memory was spot on — we found the forest park, on Militärringstraße, about 400 metres from Luxemburgerstraße and its trams/U-bahn trains straight into the Hauptbahnhof and the square beside the cathedral. The only difference was that, today, the sports club — DJK Südwest Köln — was having its Sommerfest, presumably a fund-raiser, but also an opportunity for the committee to reveal two options for the proposed development of the sports fields. We found a park, but the place was busy. There were stalls and demonstrations of Judo, and netball, and Fußball (soccer — the main sport of this club!) There were kids everywhere, having a great time — and the adults were well catered for, wih beer stalls and food stalls, and a band performing on stage. They were all having a great time. It was to end at 22.00, so we weren't worried — we just set ourselves up and enjoyed the music (which was actually quite good!) We also had a bit of a reprise, watching a video of Miniatur Wunderland — it's amazing how much we saw, but also how much we missed, when we were there!

Distance driven — today, 115 miles ( 185 km ); to date, 27,241 miles ( 43,842 km )

  2. Coolish today but we had a great drying day yesterday. Father's day to day. have a good one Warren. I nas walking down thee Edwardstown Mall yesterday to pay some layby off on Sophie's clothes and Merri's belated birthday present when thei voice said Mum could you get something for Dad from Jay and Me please? Well I gave the three of them their gifts a fortnight ago, all out of dates in my mind as usual and am very glad I did now of course. But I got said gift still. I don't feel Nick here now. I think he has gone to is spiritual home but he is, like John firmly in my heart, and sometimes they chat to me. Its a very nice feeling. When I look back at both their lives, John was a rebel and Nick met every challenge head on and what more could you ask of them? Belinda and I I hope poor Jay will come out of his shell soon and realise he must do the same.
Nough of that, The Sommerfest looked fun to be at for everyone. Glad you enjoyed it.. The kids looked like kids everywhere too. Tony Abbott is relenting a bit about Syrian refugees-am sick of locking the neediest people out and not housing the poorest, Will get active somewhere soon and help with that. I love you guys and the rest send their love. Cathy
