Farewell Rīga! We bade goodbye to the railway bridge and the trolley buses as we set off for Estonia and Tallinn.
On the way out we went through more road works. Little did we know at that stage how much road works would affect our travels today!
We were driving through forests much of the time, with little railway stations nestled among the trees.
At one point we noticed that a dead tree had been painted a magnificent orange — art works take many forms!
As we were approaching the Estonian border, road works on the A1 were coming thick and fast. We went through four sets of traffic lights within only a few kilometres.
Not far short of the Estonian border, we were the first in the queue being held up at yet another traffic light when Warren realized that the town on the road sign right in front of our eyes, Ainaži, was on a road that went right up the coast and would bypass any more roadworks on the highway, as well as giving us a more scenic route up into Estonia. We turned off, and to our surprise, about six or seven cars followed suit.
The new road was everything we expected — pleasant scenery, and no road works. But the best of it was that we happened on a hiking path from Ikla on the border quite a way northwards — and on that path there are free campsites for all comers. They were busy, but quiet and clean, so we pulled in to Krapi Telkimisala, one of the campsites, for the night. Totally delightful. Remember our search for shade — well this is the perfect spot, with tall forest trees all around. And there was the Baltic Sea only about 50 metres away!
Distance driven — today, 80 miles ( 129 km ); to date, 25,683 miles ( 41,333 km )
Once again lost this Blog to the ether. Busy day. Warren is resourceful isn't he?
