04 Jun 2014. <IE> Killarney, & Tralee, & Listowel, & Tarbert, Co. Kerry —
Today we finally left Killarney, but not without a short visit to St Mary's Cathedral, consecrated only in 1855 and extensively renovated in the 1970s. It's one of the sights worth seeing on the Ring of Kerry, so we couldn't leave Killarney without a visit. Didn't stay long, as it is in very active use, but stayed just long enough to get a feel of the calm within this huge Gothic-style building.

Then left for Tralee (Trá Lí). Got there after only about half an hour — it's not far away. Went into town and had a coffe at Costa — they chuckled when we asked for large coffees, and when we received them we knew why — they were in two-handled cups, as they were too large to hold with only one. But they really hit the spot! There was little in Tralee we wanted to see, so we left pretty soon for Listowel (Lios Tuathaíl), about 20km to the northeast. Were interested in the Lantigue Monorail (not running), Listowel Castle (closed), Garden of Europe (set up in 1995, rather tired now). We poked around for a while, had lunch looking over a stone bridge and running water, then left for Tarbert, up on the River Shannon estuary. Got in rather late, and parked by the Tarbert Bridewell, an old gaol — funnily, it's flying an Australian flag — is there any significance?! We'll find out tomorrow morning!

We went for a walk that has been laid out through unspoiled woodland — beautiful, peaceful, and the birds kept us company all the way round. After we got back to the van, Susie spent about 10 minutes cleaning the mud off her shoes. I'm waiting for mine to dry out overnight, and it should just knock off!

Distance driven — today, 64 miles ( 103 km ); to date, 1,991 miles ( 3,205 km )
