8 May 2014. <GB-WLS> Mumbles Head, & The Gower, Swansea, Swan; Tycroes, Carm —
Mumbles Day. Raining lightly. Left Gowerton, drove through the outskirts of Swansea and then southwards. About 3 miles later we were at Mumbles Head, the playground of Swansea at the beach on the western side of Swansea Bay — at least, it is when the sun is shining. There are mini-golf courses, a children's playground, tulip gardens and a high street of shops to be explored. Not today — wet, and a biting wind. We got out, walked along the beachfront, found a restaurant called Verdi's — obviously a well-known popular spot. Went in for a pizza lunch. Beautiful, just the thing for a cold, windy day! Apparently this spot is one of the not-to-be-missed places around here, and we can heartily endorse this!

Returned to the van, drove out along the Gower to Rhossili, where there would be a magnificent view on a fine day. But we got its alter ego, just as spectacular, when the winds from the west drive the breakers towards the shore. We had been told of Joe's Ice Creams (having been warned to avoid all substitutes beforehand), and there was a Joe's outlet right where we stopped. The woman behind the counter was astounded that anyone would want ice creams on a day like today, but we indulged in Welsh Cake and Caramel Chip ice creams — the recommendation was wholly deserved!

Thatched Cottage at Point Eyron
Took a couple of photos, then turned back to Port Eynon, just round the cape and facing south on its own bay. Passed lovely thatched cottages, numerous caravan parks (fairly well populated!) and went down through incredibly narrow, winding village lanes to a magnificent broad beach. We can see why the Gower would be so popular for a summer getaway. For Warren it was Easter Holidays at Point Lonsdale — not swimming weather, but good beachcombing conditions.

Then we left the Gower, heading north to Ty Croesi, where the Rugby Club has its welcome sign out. When we got there, Warren went into the clubhouse and enjoyed a couple with the locals. But for the strong Welsh lilt, they're just like the folks back home — if you choose from the rugby-mad minority! Tomorrow, further west.

Distance driven — today, 65 miles ( 105 km ); to date, 775 miles ( 1,248 km )
