A cold morning's start by the bullring at Astorga — the ground was covered with frost, and our windscreen a playground of ice. (But, according to the news, it's even colder in the UK!!)
Didn't really want to get up out of our lovely cosy bed, but we made the effort. We were soon on our way, driving from Astorga to A Coruña on the coast.
Didn't really want to get up out of our lovely cosy bed, but we made the effort. We were soon on our way, driving from Astorga to A Coruña on the coast.
To get to A Coruña, we crossed the Montes de León and the Sierra de Ancares — both above the snow line, and we got flurries of snow as we drove. (The highest point we reached was 1221 metres in the Montes de León.)
The scenery is spectacular. We felt we could have been driving in Australia — it was uncanny. Then we realised that the Spaniards in this region seem to have fallen in love with the Australian Gum Tree — they are planted everywhere, as plantations, and also interspersed between the native (?) conifers — but a lot of evergreen!
We stopped off in Lugo for a coffee/computer break at a huge Eroski supermarket complex with a Macca's upstairs. With caffeine levels and computer battery both replenished, we pushed on through even more wonderful scenery, arriving at an aire by a small harbour to the north-east of A Coruña, where we found the flattest point at the topmost point of the sloping, cobblestoned site, laid our van athwart the slope so we wouldn't roll out of bed, and settled in for the night.
Distance driven — today, 171 miles ( 275 km ); to date, 11,356 miles ( 18,276 km )
