12 Jan 2015. <ES> Pamplona —

Today we left France and drove through the Spanish countryside to our destination, the capital of Navarra, Pamplona. Lovely drive through mountainous regions — the Michelin road atlas we have for Spain and Portugal marks stretches of road with picturesque scenery by colouring them green. Our whole drive today was on such roads!

We drove into the city until we found a parking space beside a park, and walked down to a nearby McDonald's — not a drive-through this time, but a mid-city affair. We sat there for an hour or so, doing catch-up and charging the computer. Then we went out for a bit of a walk around the park, leaving the proper tourism until tomorrow. We had to get away, anyway, as our parking spot was involved in a clearway later in the day.

As we were coming back to the van, we heard a thump from the road. This rather obstreperous gentleman(?) had tried to push his way through the rear of a (female) fellow-motorist, and he was now telling her in no uncertain words that it was entirely her fault! He would get short shrift back in Oz, where a car going up the rear of someone else is presumed to be at fault unless there is clear and indisputable evidence to the contrary!

But the thing that struck us was that the fruit trees in the park were in blossom, being visited by industrious bees, and there were little birds flitting in and out of the foliage. Not exactly what you tend to expect in January in the Northern Hemisphere. So that's why all the Brits make their way over here for the winter!

We adjourned to an aire in nearby Berriozar, a suburb of Pamplona, for the night.

Distance driven — today, 69 miles ( 111 km ); to date, 10,875 miles ( 17,502 km )
