7 Dec 2015. <GB-ENG> London —
Today we went in to the National Gallery, on Trafalgar Square. If you think you can do this place in less than day, you have another think coming. One of the most magnificent art collections in the world.

Here are just a few of the highlights we found in the Gallery...

An old Woman (The Ugly Duchess) by Quentin Massys, which was the model for Tenniel's illustration for the Duchess in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Two major works by Leonardo — The Virgin in the Rocks, and a cartoon for Virgin and Child with Saints Anne and John the Baptist

The four paintings in Veronese's Allegory of LoveInfidelity, Scorn, Respect and The Happy Union.

A beautiful Botticelli, Venus and Mars.

One of the rooms is resplendent with Turner, Gainsborough and Stubbs. We watched as an art class was taking place in the presence of the masters, in this case, Constable! Stubbs' Whistlejacket is one of the best paintings of a horse we have ever seen!

Turner. The parting of Hero and Leander

Turner. Rain, Steam and Speed

Turner. The Fighting Temeraire

Gainsborough. The Artist's Daughters with a Cat

Constable. The Hay Wain

George Stubbs. Whistlejacket

The impressionists are well represented. Here are a couple by Edgar Degas — After the Bath, Woman Drying Herself and Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando, and one by Seurat — Une Baignade, Asnières.

By the time we came outside, it was well and truly dark. We made our way back to out apartment for a well-earned rest!
