14 Aug 2014. <GB-ENG> Lake District National Park, Cumbr —

Aira Force

Further upstream
Today we spent a morning at McDonald's in Carlisle, catching up with the Blog. Then we drove south into the Lake District National Park, to a National Trust property on Ullswater (the second-largest of the lakes) which had a waterfall called Aira Force, a spectacular sight well worth the visit. There are heaps of walks in the area, and it is red squirrel country (not that we saw one!). Had a nice time walking and exploring the woodlands, and the waterfalls did not disappoint!

A steamer on nearby Ullswater
After this, we retired to our van in an unofficial carpark above the falls (the main carpark is a pay-and-display affair below the falls, giving you access to the woodlands and the falls, and also to the lake in the other direction). This park was a good spot to spend the night, although we did move from our original park to one nearer its entrance because, with the light rain that was now falling, Warren (the pessimist) thought our original spot might get us bogged in the morning. Anyway, the new spot was flatter, so no chance of rolling out of bed during the night!

Distance driven — today, 39 miles ( 62 km ); to date, 5,793 miles ( 9,323 km )
